Eterna Gym interior in Platinum

Gardenia is the Gym Leader of the Eterna Gym. She uses Grass-types.

In Diamond and Pearl, Gardenia has a Turtwig that is level 19 and knows Grass Knot, Razor Leaf, Withdraw and Reflect, a Cherubi that is level 19 and knows Grass Knot, Leech Seed, Growth and Safeguard, and a level 22 Roserade that knows Grass Knot, Magical Leaf, Stun Spore and Poison Sting. In Platinum, she retains the Turtwig, at level 20 and replaces Withdraw with Sunny Day, Cherubi is replaced by a level 20 Cherrim with Grass Knot, Magical Leaf, Leech Seed and Safeguard and the Roserade is now at level 22 with a Sitrus Berry but its moveset is unchanged. Upon defeat, Gardenia gives out the Forest Badge, TM86 Grass Knot, and 2640 Pokédollars.

Tips for Beating Gardenia[]

  • Remove Turtwig immediately: It has Reflect, which makes Staravia and the Fire types accessible at this point's job harder, as Roserade is moderately bulky against NFEs. In Platinum, it also has Sunny Day which make it more advisable to let it set that up first before going on the offensive as none of her Pokémon will enjoy Sun boosted Flame Wheels or Embers.

  • Let her turn up the heat (Platinum only): While the risk of Reflect is great in Platinum, she is likely to use Sunny Day first, which helps Cherrim through Flower Gift but it gives any Fire-type move a boost as well. Use this to your advantage.
  • Bring on the Swarm: Be it Kricketune or one of Wurmple's evolutions, their movepools all have ways of dealing good quantities of damage while resisting the Grass STAB thrown at them.

Good Pokémon to Use[]

  • Staravia: STAB Wing Attack, what more needs to be said? Roserade can take a few hits if Turtwig managed to set up a Reflect, allowing it to then paralyze you with Stun Spore. This makes the fight a lot rougher than it needs to be as Roserade's base 125 Special Attack means Magical Leaf hurts despite being resisted.
  • Monferno: Resisting everything her team has offensively due to its Fighting sub-typing, the fiery monkey can crash through the Grass-types with STAB Flame Wheel, with Sunny Day in Platinum working in its favour.
  • Dustox/Beautifly: Both pack a double resistance to Grass attacks thrown at them while retaliating with Gust (STAB in Beautifly's case). In terms of each separate bug's movepool, Dustox gets Confusion to wail on Roserade's Poison typing while Beautifly can cripple her team with Stun Spore.
