Erika is the Leader of the Celadon City Gym. She uses Grass types.

Erika's FRLG battle sprite.

Her team is as follows:

  1. Victreebel (Lv.29): Stun Spore/Acid/Poisonpowder/Giga Drain
  2. Tangela (Lv.24): Poisonpowder/Constrict/Ingrain/Giga Drain
  3. Vileplume (Lv.29): Sleep Powder/Acid/Stun Spore/Giga Drain

Your reward for defeating her is the Rainbow Badge, TM19 Giga Drain, and 2,900 Poke Dollars.

Tips for Beating Erika[]

  • Exploit the Grass type's many weaknesses: Many Pokemon available at this point in the game have STAB super effective coverage against Grass types, so they are a great place to start planning your attack. Fire, Poison, Bug, and Flying types are examples of such Pokemon.

  • Use the Game Corner to buff your team: In the same city as Erika's Gym, you can buy infinite copies of many powerful TMs, including Flamethrower, which absolutely destroys her team. If you feel you might need a boost to meet her at your best, look into Game Corner prizes.
  • You can do things out of order if you need more levels: You aren't obligated to fight Erika as soon as you've set foot in the city. If you feel that your team is below par in terms of levels, feel free to take down the Team Rocket Hideout and maybe even Pokemon Tower before you take her on.

Good Pokemon to Use[]

  • Fire types: The game hands you two chances to catch a Fire type in the leadup to Celadon City (Growlithe in FR and Vulpix in LG). Further, you could have picked Charmander (which really puts in work, especially if you splurge for Flamethrower) or evolved your Eevee into Flareon (which can be a powerhouse immediately thanks to the Game Corner). Any of these Pokemon is more than enough to sweep through Erika.
  • Flying types: Several Flying types are already available by this point in the game, and their super-effective STAB is also a great weapon against Erika. Fearow, Golbat, and Butterfree deserve special mention, as each has a specialty that is helpful in this battle; Fearow has raw power over the other common Flying types, Golbat resists every attack Erika has, and Butterfree has super-accurate Sleep Powder (to which Grass types aren't immune in these games!).
  • Bug types and Poison types: These two types also have natural advantages over Grass types, but it's notably harder to be successful with them in this Gym due to lower attacking power (for Bug types as well as lines like Oddish's and Bellsprout's in this scenario) and overall lesser security in tanking Giga Drains (for Nidoking and Nidoqueen, although the problem is very slight and their Flamethrowers are all-but-guaranteed 2HKOs).
