Gulpin is an uncommon encounter that can be found on Route 110 in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald.

At first glance, Swalot seems like your average Poison-type: low Speed, balanced all-around stats, pretty wide movepool. That first glance is quite accurate. It's not a Pokémon that many will go out of their way to use, but if it does end up finding a spot on your party, it likely won't disappoint. It has great utility throughout the entire game, as its bulk and typing allow it to sufficiently handle several in-game threats and its useful movepool, which includes gems such as Ice Beam and Body Slam, give it the ability to cripple or occasionally outright beat some of the toughest opponents in the game. While Swalot will rarely be a standout sweeper or wall, it'll always be a reliable choice that can patch up the holes of a weak team, whether that involves providing some bulk to a fragile team or giving some offensive coverage to a team lacking in move diversity.

Important Matchups Edit

  • Gym #2 - Brawly (Dewford Town, Fighting-type): While Gulpin seems like it would do well in this battle, it'll actually end up being more of a liability than anything else. Gulpin's best attack is Sludge, and while its 30% poison chance is usually very helpful, status conditions are something you'll want to avoid giving Brawly's two Guts users. Additionally, since Gulpin likely won't be able to KO either Machop or Makuhita very quickly, they can start to set up with Bulk Up on it, which will spell bad news for the rest of your team.
  • Rival (Route 110): Gulpin handles your rival's Grass-type (either Shroomish or Grovyle) admirably. Sludge should be able to pick up a 2HKO, and you shouldn't have to worry about taking very much damage - the strongest move you'll have to watch out for is Grovyle's non-STAB Pursuit. Wailmer is fine to take on, but it's advisable to save Gulpin for your rival's Grass-type, as you'll want it at high health so it can check Shroomish/Grovyle reliably. Gulpin can take an Ember or two from Combusken, but it's risky enough that you might not want to attempt it.
  • Wally (Mauville City): This battle can be won by pretty much anything, but Gulpin isn't going to be the best choice, as it's weak to Confusion. It'll still work in a pinch, but if you don't have anything else that can beat Ralts, then your team might have some pretty big issues.
  • Gym #3 - Wattson (Mauville City, Electric-type): Gulpin can't touch Magnemite or Magneton, and Voltorb's SelfDestruct is too dangerous to risk - Gulpin usually can't OHKO Voltorb with Sludge, and since Voltorb is faster, it'll have at least two turns in which it can go boom.
