Kabuto is first obtained as the Dome Fossil item in Mt. Moon. Once you reach Cinnabar Island, you can revive the fossil in the Cinnabar Laboratory and obtain a Level 5 Kabuto. This is the only possible way to obtain it.

Kabuto and Kabutops. The inferior choice to Lord Helix. But if you're a Dome supporter and chose its fossil. This article is for you. Kabutops is mostly known as the Swords Dance set up mon because of its great Attack stats. While it does have Swift Swim and the ability to learn Rain Dance, it rarely ever gets a benefit from it because of the frail Sp. Atk it possesses. So people actually have a reason to choose Omastar instead and not just for the jokes. Kabutops is still useful in some late game situations though, nonetheless its the worst fossil option in Kanto being outplayed by a blue shellfish and a bad ass stone dragon.

Important Matchups W.I.P.[]

  • Gym #3 - Lt. Surge (Vermilion City, Electric-type): It depends if you still have a baby low leveled Kabuto or a god-killer Kabutops so I think you can infer when and when not to approach Surge with dome crab.
  • Gym #7 - Blaine (Cinnabar Island, Fire-type):
  • Gym #8 - Giovanni (Viridian City, Ground-type):
  • Rival (Route 22, pre-Elite Four):
  • Elite Four Lorelei (Indigo Plateau, Ice-type):
  • Elite Four Bruno (Indigo Plateau, Fighting-type):
  • Elite Four Agatha (Indigo Plateau, Poison-type):
  • Elite Four Lance (Indigo Plateau, Dragon-type):
  • Champion Rival (Indigo Plateau):
  • Post-Game: Kabutops shouldn't be very close to Mewtwo in my opinion.

  • What Nature do I want? Adamant is a good nature for Kabutops, lowering its already mediocre Special Attack and raising its incredible Attack stat.
  • What Ability do I want? Battle Armor of course. Swift Swim only gives advantages to good Special Attackers, which isn't a term to describe Kabutops. Battle Armor is also, in my opinion, one of the best abilities to have in a Fire Red or Leaf Green Nuzlocke attempt, because of the abundance of crits in Gen III and their ability to ruin great runs.
  • At what point of the game should it be evolved? Right after you get it. Yes, its a hell of a grind, but otherwise you're stuck with a useless rock bug that can't save its life from the weakest of Caterpies.
  • How good is the Kabuto line in a Nuzlocke? The Kabuto line are OK Pokemon. As mentioned earlier, they are the worst choice in the fossil selection all the way in Mt. Moon, but it doesn't mean its not viable, since it can help you out in the later game fights.
