Tips for Beating Drake[]

  • Ice is nice: As is the case with most Dragon type specialists in the Pokemon franchise, Drake's team

is glaringly weak to Ice; in fact, only his Kingdra in Emerald isn't. Therefore, bringing Ice-type coverage is a great way to seize the advantage.
  • You'll need natural bulk to tank: Drake's team has a lot of coverage against Steel types, which might otherwise be able to tank their way to victory by virtue of their plethora of resistances. Therefore, it's better to bank on natural bulk than on resistances in tanking Drake's attacks.
  • Get quick KOs: Drake's team is a mix of Pokemon with setup strategies and powerful dedicated attackers. Therefore, the longer any one matchup lasts, the likelier it becomes that something bad will happen to one of your teammates. It's in your best interests to use powerful attacks that target his team's weaknesses, with the goal of getting quick KOs and avoiding the dangers of a protracted battle.
  • About Protect move: Drake's Shelgon has a great chance to start the battle using Protect.

Good Pokemon to Use[]

  • Ice types: Examples include Walrein and Glalie. Walrein can use Ice Beam to inflict great damage in this battle (except Kingdra). You can buy Ice Beam in Mauville Game Corner.
  • Dragon types: Examples include Salamence and Flygon. Salamence can use Dragonbreath/ Dragon Claw (learned from Bagon at lv49) to inflict damage to Kingdra.
  • Bulky Water types: Similar to your previous fight against Glacia, bulky Water type Pokemon can do good work in this room. Some of them resist key moves, like the Flamethrower coverage on several of Drake's Pokemon, and others are just some of the best tanks in the game. The most ideal choices will be ones who can make very effective use of Ice-type attacks too, like Tentacruel, Milotic, Walrein, and Swampert.
  • Wallbreakers and/or Sweepers: Pokemon that can launch powerful attacks from the word "Go" are handy in this fight because of the need to achieve quick KOs. Ice coverage is, of course, a must. Pokemon like Exploud, Sharpedo, and Starmie fit this bill pretty well.
