Bruno is the second challenge in the Indigo Plateau gauntlet.

Spr FRLG Bruno

Bruno's FRLG battle sprite.

His team is as follows: Level 51 Onix (Earthquake/Rock Tomb/Iron Tail/Roar), Level 53 Hitmonchan (Sky Uppercut/Mach Punch/Rock Tomb/Counter), Level 53 Hitmonlee (Mega Kick/Foresight/Brick Break/Facade), Level 54 Onix (Double-Edge/Iron Tail/Earthquake/Sand Tomb), Level 56 Machamp (Bulk Up/Cross Chop/Scary Face/Rock Tomb). Your reward for defeating him is passage to the next room and 5,600 Poke Dollars.

Tips for Beating Bruno[]

  • Psychic is king: Bruno has no strong answer to Psychic type Pokemon, and his Fighting types are weak to Psychic attacks. Therefore, you should use the Psychic type to get the upper hand.

  • Use other type advantages: Bruno's two Onix could be threatening if you try to get fancy with neutral matchups, but are easy pickings if you target their quad-weaknesses to Water and Grass. Further, a lot of the threat of Hitmonchan and Machamp vanishes if you take them on with a Ghost Pokemon; their STAB Fighting moves suddenly become ineffective and they're forced to rely on Rock Tomb for damage. Beware, though; Hitmonlee can use Foresight to nullify that advantage.
  • Intimidate is useful: All of Bruno's Pokemon rely on physical attacks to damage you; Pokemon with the Intimidate Ability lower their Attack stats upon entering battle, which shrinks their damage output and makes them less threatening.
  • Beware his few tricks: By and large, Bruno's strategy is to deal direct damage to your Pokemon. However, he does have a couple tricks he can pull out to disrupt your strategy, like Onix's Roar and Hitmonchan's Counter. Don't lose sight of them and turn the battle into a mindless slugfest, because you could very well end up paying for that complacency.

Good Pokemon to Use[]

  • Psychic types: As mentioned above, Bruno has no solid answer for Psychic types. Special mention goes to Starmie (for having STAB on Water, which makes the Onix duo easily doable in one sweep) and Alakazam (for being a generally awesome sweeper), which are the cream of the Psychic type crop, in general and in usefulness for this fight.
  • Gengar: Gengar has a natural immunity to Bruno's primary attacking type and the raw sweeping stats and movepool to power through his team all by itself.
  • Gyarados: While it isn't as solid an answer to Bruno as the other Pokemon listed here, it has Water coverage for the Onix, Intimidate for neutering his dangerous physical attackers, and a resistance to Fighting moves.
